Twenty Million and Counting…

As of today Technorati is now tracking twenty million blogs, and is adding many more every minute. When Mobius invested in Technorati just over a year ago and I joined the board, Technorati was tracking just a few million blogs. While the past year has not been without scaling and performnance challenges, the team has really stepped up, and right now, performance is better than it has ever been, and will continue to get even better as the year goes on. Way to go guys!

  • Any sense of what percentage of those blogs are “real”. ie, not a splog and actually active?

  • Craig, clearly spam blogs and other manner of fake blogs are a growing problem in the blogosphere, though Technorati believes the numbers to be small (less than 10%). Here’s an excerpt from Technorati CEO David Sifry’s last post on the state of the blogosphere:
–>About 70,000 new weblogs are created every day
–>About a new weblog is created each second
–>2% – 8% of new weblogs per day are fake or spam weblogs
–>Between 700,000 and 1.3 Million posts are made each day
–>About 33,000 posts are created per hour, or 9.2 posts per second
–>An additional 5.8% of posts (or about 50,000 posts/day) seen each day are from spam or fake blogs, on average
